Shift At Midnight Doppelganger Guide

Spotting doppelgangers is the core skill in Shift At Midnight. Some fakes are obvious - a bear waiting politely in line - but most are subtle. Here is how to check every customer and catch the fakes before they leave.

The NET Database is your best tool. Every legitimate ID has a barcode; no barcode, or a refused ID, is your first red flag.

How to Identify a Doppelganger

When a customer approaches, use the NET Database to cross-reference their ID against their stated details. Every legitimate ID has a barcode - if someone hands over a document without one, that is your first red flag.

For customers who refuse to hand over their ID, run their passport or driving licence through the computer to pull their records.

Then question them on three things: date of birth, occupation, and appearance. Doppelgangers slip up - they might claim a scar is on the left side of their face when the ID says right, or describe a job that does not match what is on file.

One detail removes all doubt: if the system confirms the person you are serving is deceased, you are not talking to a human.

What Happens if You Miss One

Letting any doppelganger leave the store does not just end the threat for that shift - it strengthens the entities that appear after closing and adds that doppelganger to the post-shift hunt roster.

When a doppelganger gets through, you have 60 seconds to prepare: arm yourself, nail wooden planks onto the three doors with E, and set traps at each entrance. When the timer hits zero, entities spawn.

The Six Entity Types

There are six entity variants that can hunt you after closing, each with its own rules. Treating them all the same will get you killed.

The Demented works like SCP-173: direct eye contact freezes it, but the moment you look away it closes the gap fast. Use that predictability to funnel it into a trap.

The Marionette is the only entity you can prevent from spawning at all. The music box is on the shop floor - rewind it before the song completes its third loop and the Marionette never appears.

Surviving the Post-Shift Hunt

During the hunt, a patience bar sits at the top of the screen. An eye icon fills when you are in the entity's line of sight; if it turns red, it is actively pursuing you.

Duck behind cover to reset the meter. Audio matters - footsteps and open microphone noise both register, so stay quiet.

Ventilation shafts in the stockroom and shop floor are hiding spots, but they are not permanent safe zones. Use them to break line of sight, not to camp indefinitely.

The Weapons Arsenal unlocks once the patience bar reaches halfway. Your standard firearm does minimal damage, so purchase stronger weapons through the computer before the shift ends.

Blood Moon Nights

A Blood Moon guarantees entities spawn after the shift ends, and venturing outside triggers one of the hunt events.

Each entity that appears gives you an on-screen instruction telling you the specific rule you need to follow to survive it - read it immediately.

Before your shift starts, check the notes on the counter and read any new emails. They tell you which threats are active that night.
